There is a great post by Steven B via ACRLog about the proliferation of courses on Google popping up at Colleges and Universities. One of the courses he discusses in particular is at Duke University and is called, “Google: the Computer Science Within and Its Impact on Society“. Its a freshman seminar course and discusses the implications of Google on privacy, social and economic impact and the technology behind the search engine. Steven fears a course like this may lead to the mentality that “if its not online it doesn’t exist”. I agree that that is a possibility but I think if the course is offered in the social sciences it could lead to more critical thinking about the Google empire. I especially like that the Duke course emphasizes the impact on privacy which is something many students never think about. I would also hope that some time is spent discussing how Google gets it information and why it is limited.
